Dice notation for tabletop play

How NdS±M dice notation works in this online roller—examples for d20, 2d6, and 2d6+3 that match the live tool.

Tabletop groups often write rolls as NdS with an optional modifier. This guide covers only the notation this site actually parses and rolls.

Open the roller, type an expression in Advanced notation, or use the count/sides/modifier controls—the result is the same engine either way.

The basic pattern

N is how many dice to roll (optional; a bare d20 means 1d20). S is the number of sides. An optional + or − adjusts the sum after the faces are added.

Working examples on this site: d20, 1d20, 2d6, 2d6+3, 3d8+2, and 4d8-1. Counts can go up to 999 and sides from 2 to 9999.

What this notation does not cover

There is no built-in advantage/disadvantage, exploding dice, or keep-highest syntax. For 2d20 take-high, roll 2d20 and choose manually.
